In Fairness To All Army Bandsmen

You may have noticed by now that I have a little bit of an attitude when it comes to my experience in the army band system.

That's not news. People who had to deal with me in the army probably felt they had their hands full; I am sure they will tell you all sorts of things about me, most of which are probably true.

But I do need to acknowledge a couple of things to all of you brave and noble soldiers who either proudly served in an army band at some point, or are doing so at this moment. No sarcasm intended; seriously.

There have been, and I am sure there still are, a great number of fine ladies and gentlemen who are satisfied with their army band experience, and who feel an honorable and fulfilling sense of duty as they complete their daily tasks. To all of you, I tip my civilian hat.

I've already talked about the crap that many army bandsmen have to endure every day. There's surely no shortage of it. It was tough for me to handle. But there are a lot of people who enjoy their military roles, who know how to deal with the BS, who don't let it get to them, and who carry onward through the struggle. In this sense you are better soldiers than I ever could be, and I salute you.

It is my sincere hope that those of you who choose a career as an army bandsman remain safe and secure, and are able to enjoy your well-earned veterans benefits upon your ETS or retirement.

There are a lot of sites online dedicated to army bands around the world. My page represents but one viewpoint. Hopefully others who read and appreciate my message can help spread the word about life as a military musician, both the good and the bad, and that what I write about my experiences can help someone make an informed decision about a possible career in the army band.
